Get Over It - Official opening of the Sam Thompson Bridge
Join us, the Connswater Community Greenway as we officially open the Sam Thompson Bridge on Friday 4th April 2014. Join in the celebrations and be one of 2014 people to ‘get over it’ anytime between 12noon - 4pm.
The opening of this bridge signifies a very important milestone for the £35 million Connswater Community Greenway (CCG). The Sam Thompson Bridge will not only connect Victoria Park to Airport Road, the Harbour Estate and Titanic Quarter but it will also open up access to the 9km Connswater Community Greenway currently under construction.
The landmark footbridge was named Sam Thompson Bridge after you, the public, were asked to ‘Name the Bridge’ last year. Sam Thompson (1916-1965) was a local east Belfast shipyard worker and playwright. His plays including ‘Over the Bridge’, cover themes such as school days, neighbourhood friendships, life in the shipyard and the trade union movement.
We encourage everyone to join in on the celebrations by visiting Victoria Park on the day, crossing the Sam Thompson Bridge; being one of the first to ‘get over it’. There will be lots to see and do in the park and everyone who crosses the bridge will get a chance to win a spot prize! You can access the bridge via Victoria Park or Airport Road.
